Bike Ferry Captain

Position:

The Island Line Bike Ferry is Vermont's only bike ferry service and one of a few in the entire country. This destination is one of the most scenic in the world, bringing cyclists and pedestrians across "The Cut", a 200-foot gap on the beautiful Colchester Causeway. With Burlington 10 miles to the south and South Hero 3 miles to the north, the Bike Ferry is the Island Line connection for locals, tourists, and traveling cyclists. The Bike Ferry is a 45-foot pontoon boat designed to carry passengers and bikes.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Coast Guard Certified Captain is in command of the Bike Ferry and its crew and has overall responsibility during the daily shift. The 20-passenger Ferry operates from mid-May to mid-October. Full day shift is 9am to 7pm Fridays and weekends; 9am to 6pm other weekdays. Shifts begin and end at Champlain Marina in Malletts Bay, Colchester..

Responsibilities:

  • Captain’s duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Overall command and safe operation of the 45-foot pontoon boat, ensuring safety of crew and passengers.
  • Pilot Bike Ferry from Champlain Marina, Colchester to operating location at the Cut on the Colchester Causeway, 3+ miles.
  • Shuttle up to 20 passengers and bikes/related equipment, on demand, from one side of Cut to the other.
  • Adherence to legal and company standards with special regard to USCG regulations.
  • Maintenance of bike ferry pontoon boat in condition of safe operational readiness at all times.
  • Perform daily checks of fuel and oil levels, to include gas fill-up as necessary
  • Train and direct staff to maintain high standards of safe operation of the ferry and its systems.
  • Conduct regular safety drills in accordance with the station bill.
  • Management of the daily ferry operation, including operational supervision of on-site staff.
  • Oversee and assist deckhand in safe loading, unloading and transport of ferry passengers, bicycles and related equipment.
  • Oversee collection of donations, including making the daily bank deposit at the end of daily shift.
  • Send passenger logs throughout the day and oversee reconciliation of passenger data at the end of day.

Qualifications:

  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard license, 25-ton Master or higher
  • Competent small-boat handler, able to make many landings safely and efficiently
  • Familiarity with navigation, weather monitoring, radio communications and other generally accepted commercial marine operating policies and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to interact positively and patiently with the public and Local Motion employees and volunteers

  • Boat Operation:

(CPC) is seeking an experienced and well-qualified boat captain to provide vessel support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS), homeported at the University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) at Skidaway Island, Savannah, GA. GRNMS operates and maintains a newly built 52’ aluminum catamaran research vessel, R5202, and a 36’ rigid hull inflatable boat, R3601, to support scientific research and long-term monitoring activities, resource protection activities (e.g., mapping, habitat characterization, marine debris, invasive species, response), education and outreach activities, and assistance with local emergency response situations. The vessels support activities such as scuba diving, glider and ROV deployment, and deploying and retrieving instruments from the sanctuary and along the South Atlantic Bight. Missions may require extended transit and temporary mooring from Cape Hatteras, NC, to Cape Canaveral, FL.

CPC is looking for a boat captain with experience with missions in the field of marine sciences. Our ideal candidate will not only be a capable boat handler but also experienced in the maintenance of small boats.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe navigation and mechanical operation of the vessel in which assigned, at all times, in accordance with all NOAA, National Ocean Service (NOS), Office National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) policy guidelines, vessel operations manuals, vessel standing orders, and specifically NOAA Small Boat Standards and Procedures Manual (NSBSPM), NOA 209-125, MARPOL, and COLREGS.
  • Exercise prudent judgment at all times. Be willing, able, and capable of responding to shipboard emergencies and actively participate in drills. Conduct periodic fire, man overboard and abandon ship drills on shore or when underway.
  • Help maintain vessels and marine facilities on an as-needed basis. Ensure vessels are maintained in accordance with the NOAA Small Boat Program requirements. Document all work completed in an online vessel maintenance log and update the preventative maintenance database.
  • Help develop and refine sanctuary management documents, including marine standard operating, maintenance procedures for all vessels, guidance documents for partner organizations, and education and outreach materials.
  • Assist the Vessel Operations Coordinator with logistical details including arranging for fuel, pier space, and delivery of repair parts, galley stores, and supplies in harbors as required.
  • Conduct an Operational Risk Assessment with crew members prior to getting underway. This includes assessing weather and sea-state forecasts for the mission area.
  • Coordinate and support emergent repairs to small boat assets as required. Provide oversight during shipyard and repair periods. Help coordinate engineering work requiring certified technician assistance from engineering contractors, naval architects, electricians, and marine surveyors if required.
  • Verify cruise and float plans and communicate with the shore-side point of contact frequently when underway.
  • Conduct the vessel pre-departure checklist, hold a safety briefing for all embarked personnel at the start of every cruise day, and ensure that all safety procedures are understood and adhered to while underway.
  • Help coordinate, prepare for, and participate in annual inspection of vessels, including an annual review risk assessment for each vessel.
  • Help maintain the GRNMS warehouse and vessel equipment lockers in a clean and orderly manner, including the inventory and control of supplies and equipment.
  • Attend required training on an as-needed basis.
  • Document all vessel-related activities in the ship’s Log.

Qualifications:

  • Possess an active USCG license (100 tons or above). No candidates will be considered for this position without a 100-ton license.
  • Current Frist Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • At least 2 years of experience working on NOAA vessels, or similar research or law enforcement vessels embarked with scientific personnel.
  • Ability to work collegially with scientists, natural resources managers, and educators.

Spend your summer and fall giving SNHA’s River Discovery Boat Tours on our historic, USCG-certified passenger vessel, the Chief Uncas! Captain must be a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Licensed Master Captain to operate SNHA’s 55’ long, classic 1912 electric-powered boat. This gorgeous mahogany and white oak boat cruises with up to 24 passengers, a Tour Guide/Crew Member, and a Captain on 1-hour public tours of the Susquehanna River. SNHA also offers longer private cruises and specialty trips. Tours will be offered Thursdays through Sundays between late May and early-November, with private experiences offered on weekends and other weekdays. All tours depart from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
Captains must be comfortable working 3-9 hour shifts (sometimes in the evenings) on the Susquehanna River region known as Lake Clarke. Experience is required as well as the ability to successfully interact with the public. The position has flexible hours and weekend work is required. Employment will begin in early May and extend through mid-November.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate a 55’ vessel with up to 24 passengers in compliance with all USCG rules and reporting requirements.
  • Comply with all SNHA Boat Tour Operations standards related to touring, inspections, and operations.

Water Taxi Captain

Position:

Building and Land Technology (BLT) is now hiring a Water Taxi Captain. We are seeking an outgoing, OUPV Licensed (6-pack), Limited OUPV, or Master 25T Captain for the operation and transportation of our visitors, guests and both commercial and residential tenants, across the West Branch channel in Stamford Harbor, aboard the Harbor Point Water Taxi (Pontoon Vessel).

Responsibilities:

  • Duties and Responsibilities of the Water Taxi Captain:
  • Operate uninspected vessel of less than 100 GRT (gross register tons), equipped with propulsion machinery, carrying six or fewer passengers
  • Perform daily operational inspection(s); including and not limited to; vessel cleanliness, engine performance, oil level(s), navigational lights, horn, fuel, battery, hull, lines, fenders, additional lighting, Bimini frame & cover
  • Fuel vessel, add oil, change battery, and lightbulbs, if necessary
  • Perform daily safety inspection(s); including and not limited to; All safety equipment, such as life vest(s), Life ring(s), Lifeline/Buoy, VHF Radio, navigational lights, first-aid equipment, capable of operating and inspecting fire extinguisher(s), ladder deployment/retrieval, anchor deployment and setting
  • Management of daily reports; including trips, maintenance, fuel, passenger activity, other statistical demands, and incidents
  • Maintain vessel in excellent condition, inspect and cover vessel at end of each shift
  • Maintain a clean, pleasant, and safe atmosphere for all including team members
  • Greeting all visitors, guests and tenants with exceptional care and providing five-star customer service; including answering any questions and providing local knowledge and information, as requested

Qualifications:

  • Active/Current OUPV License (6-pack), Limited OUPV, or (Higher) Master 25T
  • Enrolled in Drug and Alcohol (DOT) approved testing program (or willingness to enroll in company sponsored program, mandatory pre-hire screening/testing)
  • Drug and Alcohol - spot check and shift testing
  • Swimming is mandatory
  • Candidate must be able to lift 40lbs
  • VHF radio knowledge/Etiquette
  • Capacity to maintain poise in a high impact, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends (Mandatory), holidays (Mandatory), and extended hours (if needed) to support all programs and events
  • Training and Certification in First Aid, CPR, Vessel Fire Safety Knowledge, and “Man overboard” sequence a plus (Not Required)

Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate single engine water taxis
  • Check fluids and fuel vessels
  • Operate point of sale system

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 25 ton inland license
