  • CPR Basics

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a life-saving technique used in emergency situations when a person's heart has stopped beating or they have stopped breathing. Here are some CPR basics:

    1. Check for responsiveness: Tap the person's shoulder and shout "Are you OK?" to see if they respond.

    2. Call for help: If the person is unresponsive, call 911 or your local emergency number.

    3. Open airway: Tilt the person's head back and lift their chin to open their airway.

    4. Check breathing: Look, listen, and feel for breathing for 5-10 seconds. If the person is not breathing normally, proceed to the next step.

    5. Begin chest compressions: Place the person on a firm surface and kneel beside them. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, between the nipples. Place the other hand on top of the first hand and interlock your fingers. Press down hard and fast, compressing the chest about 2 inches. Repeat at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.

    6. Give rescue breaths: After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths by tilting the person's head back and lifting their chin, then pinching their nose shut and giving 2 slow breaths into their mouth. Watch for chest rise with each breath.

    7. Continue CPR: Repeat the cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until emergency responders arrive or the person regains consciousness.

It is important to note that CPR should only be performed by those who have been trained in the technique. Taking a CPR course can help prepare you to respond in an emergency situation.
