The most expensive fish ever caught was a bluefin tuna, which sold for a record-breaking price of 333.6 million yen (about $3.1 million USD) at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, Japan in 2019. The 278-kilogram (612-pound) fish was caught off the coast of Aomori prefecture in northern Japan and was purchased by Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of the Sushi Zanmai chain of restaurants. The high price of the bluefin tuna was due to its scarcity, as overfishing has led to a decline in its population, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. The sale of this fish highlights the growing concerns around the sustainability of the fishing industry and the need for better management practices to protect marine ecosystems.
